Recognising the
Wind Potential

The strong wind tunnel characteristics of the Palakkad Pass β€” a natural gap in the Western Ghats mountain range β€” create one of South India's most consistent and favourable onshore wind corridors.

Detailed investigations into the wind energy potential surrounding the Ahalia Health, Heritage & Knowledge Village (AHHKV) campus identified this site's suitability for utility-scale wind energy development following wind resource assessment studies conducted across the region.

The identified wind flow characteristics β€” driven by the pressure differential between the Arabian Sea coast and the Deccan plateau β€” provided the technical basis for long-term renewable energy development planning in the area.

Wind Measurement &
Technical Validation

A Suzlon-manufactured 80m lattice wind mast was commissioned in 2007 to conduct a comprehensive long-term wind characterisation study across multiple elevation levels at the site.

Wind data measurements were recorded at 80m, 65m, and 50m hub heights over a 12-month period spanning April 2008 to March 2009 β€” capturing both the peak monsoon season wind resource and the inter-seasonal variation essential for accurate energy yield assessment.

The measurement campaign provided the technical foundation for bankable wind resource analysis, site suitability confirmation, and turbine class selection for the subsequent development phase.

From Wind Studies to
Infrastructure Development

Following successful wind resource validation, the initiative evolved into a utility-scale wind development concept β€” focused on renewable energy generation within Kerala's institutional and grid infrastructure context.

Ahalia Alternate Energy Pvt Ltd was formed as the dedicated special purpose vehicle to drive the renewable energy development initiative β€” reflecting a long-term institutional commitment to clean energy generation from this high-potential site.

The development process involved detailed coordination with KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) for grid connectivity planning, technical sanction procedures, and evacuation infrastructure development at the Walayar substation.

This transition from resource assessment to infrastructure development represents a multi-year technical and regulatory effort β€” underscoring the depth of commitment behind the initiative.

A Kerala Renewable
Energy Milestone

The Ahalia Wind Energy Development Initiative stands as a significant example of institutional renewable energy adoption and wind infrastructure development within Kerala β€” demonstrating what can be achieved through methodical resource assessment, engineering rigour, and long-term development commitment.

As an early-stage utility-scale wind development in Kerala's Palakkad corridor, the initiative reflects the renewable energy potential of the Western Ghats region β€” and the institutional vision required to unlock it.

Yadhu Krishnan, now Technical Director at Renovar Energy, played a key technical role associated with the wind energy development initiative and broader wind resource evaluation activities connected to the project β€” bringing that hands-on renewable infrastructure experience to Renovar's advisory and development work across South India.

Renovar Energy Connection

This initiative is part of the professional foundation that Renovar's technical leadership brings to every renewable energy development engagement β€” grounded in real project experience across wind resource evaluation, grid integration, and utility-scale development in Kerala.
